About UpChart
Who we are and why we built UpChart
We built UpChart around a simple belief: great music should rise because people genuinely love it — not because of hype, bots, or opaque algorithms.
We use real listener ratings, clear rules, and community signals to create charts that actually mean something. No pay-to-play. No hidden levers. Just music earning its place.
We're Mark & Mary Devlin. Originally from Glasgow, Scotland, we have started businesses on three continents.
We went to Japan in 1989, and a few years later founded Metropolis, Japan's leading English lifestyle magazine, publishing 707 weekly issues over 14 years. We also started JapanToday.com, now the world's largest English-language news site about Japan, and the first in the world to have reader discussions under the news stories. Long before "engagement" became a buzzword, we were building communities — encouraging reader participation, open discussion, and transparency at scale.
After 18 years in Japan we moved to Florida, where we ran a private-room karaoke business. In 2016 we returned to Scotland and ran a marketing agency.
We designed UpChart for listeners who care about discovering genuinely good music, for artists who deserve to be heard, and for a music culture that values quality over noise.
We hope you enjoy using UpChart and wish you the best of success in your musical journey.
